Tips to Get Your Patio Ready for Summer with the Wally Eco
Projects are in the air right now, so here's another one for you: get that back patio summer, summer, summertime ready! No patio? No problem. These tips can easily work for a typical fenced-in backyard, balcony, or even an urban rooftop (your neighbors will adore you for it!).
Let's get right to it! The product we are focusing on for this segment is the Wally Eco. A question we get asked a lot is, "Can the Eco be used outside?" and the answer is, YES! Plus, the Wally Eco planter comes in 13 different colors to easily suit whatever vibe you're going for.
Install
Wally Eco planters can be installed on multiple surfaces outdoors. The materials that support the Eco are, to name a few: plaster, drywall, wire fence, lattice/wooden fence, brick, and stucco. Should you install on a wire fence, lattice fence, or brick wall, we do recommend following the guided links to help!
Plants
When thinking about plant choices for outdoor spots, consider the following:
- Your climate: This will affect what kind of plants thrive in your area.
- Direction of sunlight: This will affect the amount and intensity of sunlight your plants receive. In the Northern Hemisphere, walls and plants facing south will receive the most (and brightest) light. Plants that don't like as much light for as long might like an east- or west-facing spot more.
- Insects: Something to watch out for. Check out our pest series for more help!
- Rainfall: This will affect how much watering your plants need.
Spring and summer is an excellent time to experiment with plants outside of typical houseplants. You may also want to consider flowers, or edibles such as herbs, fruits and veggies, all of which the Wally Eco can support! Check out our plant recommendations for more ideas.
Watering
How often you need to water will depend on the climate and plants you choose; however, it's a good rule of thumb to check on the plants often and feel the soil at least 2" down to see if it's dry enough for a good watering.
If you're in a climate with too much rainfall, you can drill a very small hole or two at the bottom of the planters to alleviate any access water from accumulating, providing ample drainage on top of the aeration that the design of the Eco provides.
Keep in mind that each Eco is mobile and can easily pop on and off the wall when you want to water, rearrange, check the soil, or re-pot. Each Eco can hold up to 30 pounds, so if there's a heavy rainfall and you don't drill holes in the bottom, it could be a good idea to bring your Eco planters out of the rain so they can dry out!
Wally Eco Maintenance
It's easy to keep the Eco planters looking shiny and new outside. You can simply wipe them down when needed with a cloth, or hose them off gently. They're also dishwasher safe for cleaning between repotting or before installing!
