How To Create a DIY Ombré Plant Wall with @ssssssssyd

Sydney Harris (@ssssssssyd) was kind enough to share the details of her floor-to-ceiling ombré living wall project and how she completely transformed her room by simply adding plants and replacing a light fixture. Read on for Sydney's inspiration for this wall and some insight into how she created this ombré effect!

INSPIRATION

I have a plant obsessioonnnn. I’ve always wanted my house to be somewhat of a jungle. But, instead of letting them take over every corner and table like I had in the past, I decided to utilize the empty wall space to keep a very clean, minimalistic look. Plus, an entire wall of plants 🤷‍♀️… not hard to justify at all! Haha.

PLANTS USED FOR THE LOOK

I had an overload of Pothos plants in my house and wanted a way to combine them all. Knowing they came in a variety of colors from neon green to deep, dark green, I knew that would be a perfect way to create the gradient I wanted with super high contrast. I used the bright, glowing Neon Pothos for the top by the ceiling to really give that space a bright pop, and then slowly melted them into the Golden Pothos (half neon and half dark), and then those into the Jade Pothos (all dark).

ECO COLORS

I used Wally Eco in White to blend in with my wall as much as possible and keep the focus on the plants.

PROCESS

I finished it over the course of 4-5 days. There were many trips to the nursery and times when I ran out of Wally Eco planters and needed to order more (the shipping was insanely fast!). But I’m kind of obsessive and once I start a project, I stay up at all hours trying to get as much done as possible. I love this kind of stuff, so it never really felt like work. It was super fun to see it slowly coming together.

TIPS

I used Pothos because I know that they are ultra low-maintenance and hard to kill. If you’re going to do something this big (especially if you’re watering it yourself), choose a plant that won’t require much tending to and can just be left to do its own thing.

THOUGHTS

I’m absolutely IN LOVE with this wall. And, plant lovers or not, anyone that comes into our house is too! It brings so much color and life to the space. It’s by far my favorite room in the house. And if I’m this in love with it NOW… I can’t wait to see what it looks like when it’s fully grown in!
